MP RAM: 2x2GB or 4x1GB?

i've searched google , forum , can't find definite answer:

mp: 3ghz quad core xeon.
i'm trying figure out if there big (noticable) difference in speed between upgrading ram less of bigger size (2x2gb) or more of smaller size (4x1gb). realize both 2gb , 1gb chips still 667 mhz, instinct tells me 4x1gb setup able handle larger load (since has 4 chips @ 667 vs. 2 @ 667). know greater certainty? also, quad core processors, there benefit having 4 separate chips?

2x2 gb means (unless want 32 gb of ram) can max out mac pro without paying through roof. you're supposed add ram in pairs, , think theoretically 4x1 gb supposed run faster, don't recall certain.
