802.11n router question

i newbie wireless routers , have few questions...

first spec 802.11n finalized yet? if buy draft-n or pre-n wireless router now, work @ optimal performance once spec finalized?

, second, how better 802.11n on 802.11 g? router placed downstairs , macbook upstairs. distance 100-150 feet.

in advance!

802.11n @ draft 2.0 in ieee process, , apparently they've said device can draft 2.0 able final spec.

confusion sets in, group called wifi alliance compatibility testing , authorize "wifi certified" logo on boxes. they've started certify hardware draft-n compatible. in theory devices have undergone testing , have logo should nicely interoperable.

however, reviews i've seen online seem imply different devices don't along well... still true of 802.11g devices, anyway. different vendors put different amounts of effort different products, , should read reviews see how given product performs. "optimal performance" moving target many years.

said, got d-link pci card (dwa-542) windows/linux box, , seems work fine airport extreme. doesn't connect @ 130 mbps macbook pro claims (usually says 104 or 117), again antennas @ of big metal computer in corner.

how better range depends lot on how 'g' router in first place. mbp connects full-speed aebs on house , in yard, router on second floor @ front of house. different routers may give different results.

1 of things keep in mind n lot of performance/range gains comes mimo (multiple input multiple output). means uses multiple antennas multiplex signals in space, in time , in code space. devices seem vary in how many antennas have, impacts on level of multiplexing can (in non-linear fashion... doubt it's simple double performance double antennas).

basic advice - read reviews, , make sure can return if doesn't work out!
