Connect Mac to PC to share external hard drive - never prompted for password

(i apologize if wrong forum).

so, here's deal: have 250 gb external hard drive preformatted in ntfs. trying network macbook , pc in order give mac access volume. keep ntfs due file size restrictions (of fat 32) , drive given uses windows exclusively.

when try connect pc, receive error saying, "could not connect server because name or password not correct." problem is, never prompted enter password.

ran wizard on windows create small network. workgroup same on both machines. have tried doing wirelessly , wired. have enabled windows , personal files sharing on mac. have disabled firewall on pc. have set volume share.

when @ "network," workgroup of "mshome" shows up; however, shows being "zero kb." in other words, there no 'space' there.

has become rather frustrating. don't know why telling me name , password incorrect when haven't entered name or password. yes, have made sure account has password. i've run network wizard several times--although i'm not sure if there several different networks; i'm not sure find that.

when use "go" , "connect server" use following syntax: smb://ip/mac -- doesn't work. i'm not sure @ point.

have installed macfuse , ntfs-3g driver on mac, seems rather slow , i'm nervous it's buggy , i'll lose data.

input appreciated.

if "connect server" following syntax: smb://ipaddress should offered choice of available shares connect to.
