Lots of problems with OS X on MacBook Pro -- hangs, slow boots, etc

i turn you, dear mr members, because don't want hand macbook pro on department undetermined amount of time. i'd have solid theories first.

have 2.16 ghz core duo macbook pro 2gb of ram issued me company. important point: run exact same software on machine on 2 personally-owned macs (a new al imac , 2.0 ghz core duo macbook), 3 exceptions: lotus notes (which don't use); adobe cs2 (instead of cs3 have @ home); , whatever secret mojo have installed os x talk our windows domain servers in proper way.

here's problems: first, thing won't shut down. ever. if tell shut down or reboot, closes apps, closes finder (so see desktop background), , stops. doesn't matter if let sit 30 minutes; way me shut down hold power button down. has been doing since pretty since issued me.

second problem: randomly, apps won't load. it's adium. it's textmate. it's mail. other morning terminal. bounce in dock second, lock , have force-quit. way them working reboot, brings me third problem:

can't start reliably. hang either @ login screen, or when desktop half-loaded (i have menu bar , spotlight icon, nothing else). have hard-reboot until boots fully. other morning had 6 times.

theory since it's random, , it's happening many apps, might hardware related. first-gen mbp , has hissing/whining logic board (getting things replaced around here doesn't seem easy). i'm wondering if contribute system instability. before go through nightmare of giving work computer, can't awhile because we're busy, i'd love know if os x ninjas have other ideas can try.

 

hmm. i'd try reinstalling os x if @ possible. hardware, , not. reduce possibilities. applications not playing nice others , causing system act wierd. try reinstalling os x. see if helps.
