Best thing to encode (re-encode) things into?

i have vast array of video files different resolutions , codecs.

go 320x240 right 1080p, mono 5.1/7.1 sound

thing is, encoded in divx mkv...

want before rid of my* octo mac pro (8x3.0ghz, 16gb ram - getting rid of due financial burden!!) encode them 1 standard, can played on everything easily. storage not issue.

should put them into, , using what? also, future dvds/blu-ray discs, program should use rip them in high quality...?

many thanks,

gav.

everything = os 9, os 10, 2000, xp & vista natively. :apple: tv, ps3, xbox 360, media streaming things , more...

*friends of family's mac pro. bit out of price league :p

played on everything? such dvd players , vcd? or windows meida, divx, quicktime...

think better question might last longest. , kind of computer replacing machine with.

dvd's or put on external hd , encode h.264 format high quality can get.
