i have almost-5-year-old 12" ibook g3 128 megs of ram , original 20gb drive seemed fine until tonight. wife attempted open large word document (16,000 pages) 600 megs of free disk space when machine crashed , couldn't reboot. kept getting question mark/empty folder icon.
put ibook target disk mode , drive came fine on emac desktop. rescued files, tossed bunch of stuff free 4gb of disk space on ibook, verified drive disk utility, shut down , attempted reboot. still wouldn't work.
booted off original system cd without problem, thought perhaps should reinstall latest version of os x via target disk mode. except when tried boot ibook holding down "t" key, happened shut off power. huh?
repeated process several times same results. chimes play, power shuts down.
if try install directly system cd, installer can't find hard drive @ all.
suspect it's drive, why have been able target disk mode work 1 time , not others? computer shutting down while holding "t" key symptomatic of bad drive or else?
please help!
if bad drive, can't imagine it'd shut down when attempting target disk mode. try resetting pmu. unplug adaptor, take out battery , leave overnight. try target disk mode again in morning.
