i have 300 cds i'm re-ripping library 2 reasons (1) had hard drive failure corrupted / lost of files , (2) i'm shifting mp3 apple lossless format.
setup: macmini linked entertainment center itunes playback ahve 2 other macbooks on network. itunes library on external hardrive connected mini via firewire --accessible macbooks via network.
issue 1: can load itunes library external hard drive on each of 3 machines, have each of 3 re-rip cds simultaneously overwrite old files? after cds have been re-ripped, i'd tell itunes on macmini rebuild library knew actual file types cds imported macbooks.
issue 2: want overwrite existing songs (1) avoid duplicate files , (2) i've misplaced / stored couple hundred other cd's, can't erase old library, rip 3 machines, import mini b/c large loss of cds.
plan follows, i'm not if work or if it's best way:
1. erase itunes library (not files) on 3 machines clean start.
2. on each machine, preferences -> advanced -> general: set itunes music folder external drive current music files located. set each computer "keep music folder organized" , "copy files itunes music folder..."
3. on each machine, select file -> add libary: add of current music files.
4. start simultaneously shoving cds 3 machines , re-importing using lossless / telling overwrite existing files when prompted.
5. when done re-importing cds, erase macbook libraries (i don't listen music on them), tell mac mini erase it's library, re-add newly ripped files , preexisting/not-overwritten files library rebuild it, mini becomes aware of files added / rewritten other 2 machines.
while none of 3 machines ripping same cd or trying overwrite same music files @ same time, concern 3 machines run problems if trying update / write same itunes non-music file, example itunes libarary database file of itunes library.xml file on external drive.
comments? suggestions? experiences?
thanks,
mjc
it won't work. can't import more 1 cd simultaneously onto 1 computer. hard drive can move fast. , doing very slow.
rip mp3's onto each computer individually. , when you're done transfer data files computer itunes library. fastest way ultimately.
