OS X-can't get ANY networked printer set up (EEK!)

(i saw "peripheral" forum, seems more networking or general type problem since issue isn't printers).
i've got new macbook pro here, , can't print networked printer @ all.
-one printer typically print directly ip address. in windows takes 2 seconds set up. on os x, seem able set fast. pick ip printing, punch in ip address, autofills in model, fills in location, lets me see how toner left. when try print it, gives me:
"unable printer status (server-error-operation-not-supported)!" (the exclamation point in error message, didn't add it.)
-the rest of printers go through server print to. assume windows server (windows prompts me domain credentials when printing them if i'm not logged in domain).
i've tried setting printers multiple times, multiple ways. browsing through domain in printer setup utility, trying use direct path resource, etc.
regardless of do, error like:
"unable connect samba host, retry in 60 seconds...debug: 0 %%page: 1 1"
, like:
"connection failed error nt_status_logon_failure"
i've seen page:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301768
seems might relevant. acts can't have special characters in password connect-except 1) *have* have special characters, , 2) i'm never prompted credentials.
i've tried setting printer in form smb://userassword@server/sharename, doesn't work either.
i've tried printing printer shared off of normal xp machine-that 1 prompts me credentials @ time try add it, doesn't accept them.
so...maybe there 2 issues here? maybe os x can't print resource has complex password?
that's going deal breaker me if it's true...but what's causing it's inability print ip address? doesn't require password, it's not working.
ideas?
i have update of sorts-a coworker uses macs able @ least me set printing directly printer. turns out laserjet on ip printer tab need pick "hp jet direct - socket" rather "internet printing protocol"-apparently pretty picks different port.
unfortunately wasn't sure how print through queue, bad considering he's knowledgeable, , networking guy. i'm wondering if os x dosen't support it-that knowledge base article not being able use passwords "special characters" kind of sounds support flaky.
our support desk gave big_smile oh well, guess if can kinda sorta print directly of these printers that's enough, i'm open other ideas.
