okay, shock of shocks, starting thread in buying tips section...
it's sunday night , no 1 wants think work in morning.
here scenario. mac has failed sata controller. figured out issue preventing booting (and drive, 7200rpm 160gb, fine) , got icy dock mb559uea-1s ($65 shipped, 3.5" enclosure, sata-i/ii, fw400 , usb2) , put drive it.
now, reinforces fact need backup device computer. means need enclosure.
here dilemma:
option 1: buy nice sata drive (like 7200rpm / 750gb barracuda) , icy dock, cost $270. @ point then, have far less 750gb of stuff, can transition being primary drive , 160gb user directory backups, , 750gb drive or 1tb drive backup, complete process of getting larger hd size, had wanted @ point (and would've needed 2 750gb drives this; now, need 2 enclosures well).
option 2: go cheaper two-drive pre-built enclosure. there's 750gb western digital kit $180 through 9/1 (link), seems (1) use 2 drives, (2) pata, , (3) uses usb2, never better backup drive.
option 3: conclude pricing of 750gb drives still not favorable, , perhaps icy dock 500gb barracuda ($180, or $90 less opt 1). 1 still nice drive, , nicer enclosure, smaller volume.
or other options? thoughts?
go 500gb, cheaper. went 4 of them in mac pro. 120 usd each. nice.
