Differences between desktop and laptop LCDs?

for while now, i've been using trusty dell 2405fpw macpro. lot of photography work, , noticed colors, particularly red (and bit less green) elements, surprisingly different when looked @ them on laptop computer. @ first, thought calibration issue, perhaps gamma problem, or maybe color management / embedded color profile. thought monitor, must crappy monitor.

however, after spending quite bit of time looking problem, can tell laptops, particularly apple laptops (and iphone) ones display these red tones differently. went apple store, , 24" imac, 23" apple cinema , 30" apple cinema displays show reds very intensely, while laptops, matte , glossy macbook pros, led backlit , cf backlit, macbooks (including wife's) , iphone don't.

consistent, used 1 photo compare these:

in desktop lcds leaves *very* red , bark on tree rich. in laptop lcds, leaves are... reddish not intense.

wouldn't care difference if didn't subtly affect skin tones. if looks on desktop lcds, it's gonna bit washed out on laptops, if looks paler in dekstop lcd, it's going gray on laptops.

tested greens photograph:

finally, reason, blue seems unaffected , looks relatively uniform across these displays.

missing? i've spent hours calibrating dell 2405fpw display find out desktop apples pretty same, laptops don't.

the difference going in panel used in lcd display. apple cinema displays , dell ultrasharp displays use high quality 8-bit panels, laptop lcd's use lower end 6 bit panels.

here's nice article on different panel types:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/panel_technologies.htm

know apple's use s-ips panel...very good. high end dells supposed use same, however, i've heard reports of lower end panels slipping in.

hope little help.
