i'd able take control of g5 @ work , run application on if need be. optimally, know best files, work on mbp send g5, in case dont have software; ie cs3 or quark. may want print networked printers mbp office printers. g5 connected hub off of network pc server....i seem able server screen, not mac using ip address mac via built in ard. suggestions?
there 3 different ways @ that, 1 of you're trying; can use vnc client (basically chicken of vnc decent 1 right now) built-in vnc server in ard; can use same 3rd party vnc server (i share desktop), gives more control on settings; or can buy copy of ard , use that.
i'm assuming you're using cotvnc ard; has worked fine me in practice, has major annoyance can't seem proper connection @ 256 colors without changing bit depth of host computer (which looks wretched). doesn't offer "speed enhancing" things full vnc server does.
ard way expensive, assume works, i'd go vnc server since that's free.
regardless, things can stop working are:
1) ip address g5 getting isn't accessible outside local network. if internal network "isolated" outside world (say, ip addresses in 192.168.x.x range), way if can vpn connection going. cause laptop appear if on local network, , let connect via ip address of g5.
2) firewall blocking appropriate ports; either g5's firewall (i don't think automatically opens ports vnc if use ard server), or if there's firewall on whole network. being case, you'd need open relevant ports on firewall make happen.
3) make sure you're using correct password , username log g5--if you're using ard vnc server, has own password , login vnc, not username you're trying log in as--you'll need if it's not logged in.
4) if situation #1 , don't have externally accessible ip address or vpn access, if it's small network may still able 1 of ports forwarded g5, can configure on g5 port vnc server listening to. option if it's small network basic router.
in there points in right direction.
